Strange smell from the hot water—is it dangerous?

I’ve noticed something really off with my water lately, and it’s starting to freak me out a bit. Every time I turn on the hot tap in the upstairs bathroom, there’s this faint, sulfur-like smell—almost like rotten eggs. It only happens with the hot water, so I’m assuming it’s something to do with the tank in the attic. I’ve read online that if you leave the temperature too low to save on energy, you can actually end up with bacteria growing inside the tank. We have a young toddler who takes baths every night, and now I’m terrified that I’m basically washing him in contaminated water. Does anyone know if this is a common issue or if I need to call a specialist to flush the whole system immediately? I’ve tried turning the thermostat up, but I don’t want to scald anyone either. Any advice on how to keep the tank safe without making it a hazard?

You are definitely right to be concerned, but don't panic just yet! That smell is usually a sign of sulfate-reducing bacteria reacting with the anode rod, but more importantly, it means your tank environment is 'friendly' to microbes. Most people don't realize that keeping your heater at a lukewarm setting is a perfect breeding ground for things like Legionella. I went through a similar scare last year and learned that maintaining a specific temperature threshold is the best defense. It’s all about finding that balance between energy efficiency and actual biological safety. I actually came across a very detailed guide that covers Effective Strategies for Safeguarding Domestic Hot Water Tanks from Microbial Risks which really helped me set up a proper maintenance routine. It explains the science behind the contamination and how to prevent it from ever starting. Definitely worth a read to put your mind at ease and get your water back to normal!
